Dependent Visa in Thailand
Foreigners who are in long stay visas in Thailand may be able to bring their family in Thailand to live with them through a Non-Immigrant O Visa also known as Dependent Visa. This type of Thai Visa applies to the immediate family (parents, spouse and minor children) of the visa holder of any of the following visas:
-
Non-Immigrant B Visa with Work Permit
-
Retirement Visa – this only applies to the spouse of the retirement visa holder who is younger than 50 years old
-
Non Immigrant O visas with Work Permit for those working for foundations and non profit organizations
What is required?
An initial non-immigrant visa can be obtained from the Thai embassy or consulate abroad. This can be extended at the Thai immigration office in Thailand.
The requirements are as follows:
-
Proof of relationship to the Non-immigrant Visa holder i.e. marriage certificate (in the case of a spouse dependent) and birth certificate (for children dependents). The Thai immigration requires that these certificates be certified by your embassy in Thailand.
-
Valid Visa and Work Permit (if any) of the foreigner
-
Invitation letter from the foreigner’s employer (optional)
Where to apply?
If the applicant is outside of Thailand, she may be able to apply for a dependent visa directly from the Thai embassy or consulate provided that she has all the necessary documents. Otherwise, the applicant can come to Thailand through an initial visa valid for 90 days and then consummate the dependent visa application at the Thai immigration office.
If the applicant is in Thailand and is holding another visa, she can always switch into a Non immigrant O dependent visa as long as she’s qualified.
Validity of the Dependent Visa
It is tied with the validity of the visa for which it’s depending on. Say the husband has a one-year visa, the foreign spouse who is a dependent will also have a one year visa.
90-day Report
The dependent visa holder has to report to the Thai immigration authorities every 90 days. If you are not in the country when your 90-day report is due, you are no more required to report. A new 90-day counting starts when you get back to the country.
